Access to Tennis Club - TAKE URGENT NOTE!

As you know, we are replacing the existing padlock on the entry gate with a new push-button pad. The new pad will be fitted shortly and may well be in place before the 1 June.

Once it's installed - even if it is before 1 June, it will be coded for THIS YEAR'S number (as shown on your 2013/14 Membership card) so don't try and enter the code from last year as it won't work!

Press the clear button (marked "C") first and then the new number.

Many thanks

Feedback & preferences on court surfaces

Some of you have now tried out  the synthetic grass and/or synthetic clay, or are due to soon, & others have played on them during matches. The committee would be grateful for your feedback & preferences to help arrive at a decision on which surface to opt for. Please forward by email to Gordon Reed on gordonreed@reeds99.freeserve.co.uk asap. Thanks to those who have already emailed comments.

Wimbledon Draw

I will be doing the draw for the Wimbledon Tickets next Saturday (25th) so, if you haven't put your name up yet, you've only got this week to do it!

I have noticed that several members have put their names up on the draw sheet without indicating any preferences for dates or putting a cross against any days they cannot attend - if these columns are still blank next week and your name is drawn, I will allocate you the tickets I would most like to have received which remain at the time your name is drawn. If you want to avoid that eventuality, you have a week to put up your preferences! Lastly, please enter your British Tennis membership number in the first column.

Many thanks

Mixed Social Tennis evenings

We are hoping to run a couple of Mixed Social Tennis evenings on Thursday 9th May and Thursday 6th June. If we get enough interest we could make it into a team tournament and retire afterwards to the bar of the new pavilion for some bread and cheese and a chat.

There is a notice in the clubhouse about it, so put your name up if you fancy some fun social tennis – hopefully all on a bright sunny summers evening (We can but hope!!)

1st Surface will be present to talk through the technical side of the various surfaces.

Court Resurfacing - Your Thoughts - 11th April 8pm

Dear Members,

As previously promised I want to keep you all informed of the on-going discussions the committee has been having about the future options for the surface of our courts.

You will know a sub-committee was established to identify options and work through the financial modelling for the future of the club.

At the last committee meeting we were presented with a compelling case to resurface the courts sooner rather than later – probably this year.

All members of the committee present were asked to vote on the plan to re-surface and it was unanimously agreed that this was the best solution.

The next phase of the process is to agree which surface should be used on the courts and we would very much like to engage with all members of the club to help shape our thinking.

To help educate everyone as to the options and their various merits we plan to hold a meeting at the Ken Williams Pavilion on Thursday 11th April at 8.00pm

We will have a potential contractor at the meeting who should be able to give an insight into the alternative surfaces and their characteristics.

It is important to state that no decisions will be made at the meeting but we want to hear your thoughts and feedback both on the night and over the next few weeks – the process starts on 11th April.

I would like to encourage as many of you as possible to join the meeting, we all look forward to hearing your thoughts and ideas.

Kind regards,

Stephen Hollings
Chairman

Fancy playing some Cricket too?

Message from Hazlemere Cricket Club:

Last year, we formed Hazlemere Cricket Club, practiced  on 6 or so occasions at Hazlemere Rec and played one game against Penn Street, which, having bowled them out for 115 or so, we failed to match, despite Millers 27, and Sean's father-in-law at the crease for almost the entire innings. Lee 'Secretary' Massey contributed a single, but a good time was had by all as everyone had a chance to bat and bowl.

So to this season:

1. We need to know if you are interested - give us a yes or no. We would like to know by the end of this month (March), so please reply to russellgthomas@btinternet.com asap.
2. If it's yes, would you prefer to play on Saturday [most likely] or Sunday afternoons?
3. And what are your strengths - batting , bowling, wicket-keeper, all-rounder etc?

We are likely to start practicing in late April / early May [we are trying to get some nets arranged], and will have practice matches in May / June, depending on numbers. Mr Massey has 2 fixtures arranged so far, but I'm sure he will be working on others. If you have contacts at other clubs, please let us know.

There will be a cost this year, in the region of £10 to register if you are an HSA member already, £20 if not. There will be a small practice fee to cover ground / net costs.

If you'd like to get involved in the organisation of the club, please let us know.

Regards,
Russell - Chairman
Lee - Secretary
Smithy - Treasurer

Subscriptions for 2013-14

Dear member,

Let me apologise on two counts - firstly the lack of Spring Newsletter and secondly this rude announcement that your tennis club subs will fall due at the end of March.

On the first count, I'm afraid (having recently retired) that I haven't had a chance to put together a Newsletter - I shall aspire to get one out in the next few weeks.

On the second count, I hope you have enjoyed your membership of the club over the last year and will be anxious to renew for the coming season.
If so, please complete the attached form (or download it from the website) and return it with your cheque to Penny Walker (by the end of April if you want to take advantage of our early payment discount).
If not, please fill out the application form and return it with your cheque to Penny Walker along with the member feedback form, highlighting any ways we could improve things for you next year!

Please make sure the email address, in particular, is legible and, if you're not a member of British Tennis and would like us to join you, make sure you tick the box clearly on the application form.

One thing perhaps I should bring to your attention now - we are looking to resurface the courts within the next year or so and are examining alternative surfaces - any thoughts of views on this would be gratefully received by the committee.

I will put a small stock of the application forms in the Clubhouse for the use of members without email.

Thank you all and have a great tennis year with Hazlemere Tennis Club in 2013-14.

AGM - Update

Following the AGM held last November, I would like to update everyone on the progress we have made investigating the options for the court surface treatment/replacement.
At the AGM we discussed some ideas and thoughts but did not have all the facts at hand to be able to make concrete recommendations.
The timing and choice of replacement surface is very important for the future development of the club with major financial and playing implications.  We will need to prepare a detailed business plan before making our recommendations and decisions.
We agreed to investigate further in the New Year keeping the membership fully informed of any findings, recommendations and possible outcomes.
The first meeting of the new committee was held on Tuesday January 8th.  At the meeting we agreed to set up a working party to focus on the resurfacing options.  The following committee members have volunteered to join the working party
Gordon Reed
David Passmore
Eric McFee
Andy Pearce

Working party will update the committee at the next meeting planned for Tuesday 27th February.  When there is more information to update the members I will ensure you are all kept informed.

Court bookings and visitors

Just a couple of reminders now that the summer seems to have arrived!

Demand for the courts is likely to get very high over the next few weeks as club matches get into full swing; the club tournament deadlines loom and members simply try and take advantage of the lovely weather. Please remember to look at the court booking sheet (pinned up in the Clubhouse) and see what's available for particular times so as to avoid turning up and finding no court availability.

Please also remember our rules about visitors, they must be signed in to the visitors' book and pay the appropriate fee. Any one visitor is limited to six visits only.

Dave´s 12 hour tennis-athon for Cambodia

Here's a message from David Burt, who is planning a charity trip!

"Hi everyone! This July I will be travelling with the charity Tearfund to the town of Poipet in Cambodia to work with a number of projects run by the Cambodian Hope Organisation, who seek to strengthen the quality of life for disadvantaged rural people and children at risk of trafficking, as well as many other things.

Obviously this trip will cost a fair bit so I will be playing a gruelling 12 hours of tennis on Sunday 3rd June to raise money for it.

If you would like to sponsor me if you are free to play on the day (both would be much appreciated), I have put forms up on the notice board in the clubhouse.

Many thanks, David Burt"

Frances Charlton

I am so very sad to report that our dear friend Frances Charlton, has passed away. Apparently she had not been well for some time (not something she would let anyone know of course).  She called the paramedics herself and was taken to hospital where she had a heart attack from which she did not recover.

Our thoughts are with Murray and Kerry (in the USA ) and all her family at this very sad time. Should anyone wish to write to Murray (who lives in Somerset ) and Kerry (who normally lives and works in the USA ), they will be at Frances 's home address until 6th May, which is:
27 Amanda Court , Langley , Slough , Berks. SL3 7TD.

I am able to advise you that Frances Charlton's funeral will be held on:
THURSDAY 3rd MAY at 2pm at Slough Crematorium, Stoke Road, Slough , SL2 5AX

All are invited for refreshments after the service at The Pinewood Hotel, Slough Road , George Green , SL3 6AP

Although flowers are welcome, Frances was particularly interested in junior tennis players, and donations are suggested for either "Tennis First" an independent charity which helps young tennis players throughout the UK who are dedicated to fulfilling their potential to reach a senior world ranking of 250 and better.    It makes grants for coaching, travel expenses and training.   The other charity suggested by the family is the British Heart Foundation. Should you wish to make a donation or send flowers please contact the Undertakers:
Newman & Son, 180 Stoke Road, Slough , SL2 5AS - Tel. No.   01753 524286

Yours sincerely,
Mary Crowshaw (Hon. Secretary, Bucks LTA)

Mary Burden

I have to report the sad news that Mary Burden has passed away at the age of 74. Those who have been members of the tennis club for a long time cannot fail to remember Mary, as she was one of the pillars of the club for many years,, being club secretary for goodness knows how long. She embodied the values to which we're still aspiring; friendly, welcoming generous of spirit and no mean player either.

As I mentioned, she was my predecessor as club secretary for many years, keeping immaculate records, in the days before laptops, powerpoint, emails or even word processors - it was a far tougher job then to keep everyone informed of what was going on at the club and maintaining the committee minutes - a real role model.

Our thoughts are with her husband Ric and her family at this sad time.

If anyone is able to and would like to pay their last respects, her funeral is at the Evesham Methodist Chusrch at 2pm on Thursday 3rd May.

Regards,
Andy Carter

The Boodles Tennis at Stoke Park

The Boodles Tennis will this year return to Stoke Park for the 11th year running.   The unique mix of an intimate English garden party and a select field of the world’s top tennis elite creates a viewing and entertainment experience that the big tournaments just can’t match.

In 2011, The Boodles hosted an incredible field of athletes including world No 1 Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Juan Martin Del Potro and David Ferrer.  The line up for 2012 is shaping up to be just as impressive with a number of the top twenty confirmed  and ready to hit the grass courts.

Guests at The Boodles will view world class players, while experiencing sumptuous luxury and 5* catering without the crowds and queues of the big tournaments.  Within The Boodles arena, no seat is further than eight metres from the court and lunch can be found by taking a leisurely stroll through Stoke Park ’s immaculate private gardens.

Tickets at this family friendly event start from £38. And with guests returning year after year The Boodles might still be the best kept secret on the international tennis circuit.  After 11 years the word is getting out so please book up today to avoid disappointment!

As a member of Bucks LTA, we are pleased to offer you the opportunity to purchase "4 stadium tickets for the price of only 3 "  on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  Please call The Boodles booking line on 020 7384 4877 and quote  " Bucks LTA "  or visit www.theboodles.com for more details.

Golf Day - 15th August

"Hazlemere Hackers" fun golf day has been arranged for Monday 15th August 2011 at Huntswood Golf Club.  We have negotiated great price of £30.00 for 18 holes of golf followed by 2 course meal (carvery). Guests can dine with us for £13.00 and members of Huntswood Golf course just need to pay £15.00.
We have given people the option this year of making up a team of 4 people themselves as often people like to bring friends or family and want to play with them or, if you prefer to mix and match then  you can put your name down on one of the groups of 4 and this will also build up random teams of 4 so please dont worry if you dont have a team of 4 we can make that happen for you!  We only ask that we have a nominated Captain for each 4 so that they can  collect the £15.00 per head and get it back to Sue or Anita , along with handicaps, by August 4th as we have to pay for the meal.  You can pay for the golf on the day.
We have lots of fun prizes for everyone and welcome golfers of all standards to come along and have fun!  The poster with all details is now up in the clubhouse.
See you on the 19th hole!

Anyone that would like to sponsor me can do so by clicking on the link below.

Refurbishment Work

If you have been up to the club recently, you cannot have failed to notice all the hard work being done on the club house to repair and upgrade the facilities.  We are expecting all the work to be completed by the end of the first week in April, ready for the new tennis season.  While the work is being done, we ask for your patience over a couple of matters.
Firstly, there will be limited tea and coffee making facilities until the work is complete.
The second issue is the refurbishment of the toilets; they have currently been removed and will not be ready for three weeks.  During this time we have provided a "Portaloo" for members to use.  For those of you who would prefer a more genteel facility, you should be able to use the toilets in the main building (Ken Williams Memorial Pavilion).  Access to the pavilion should be simple as it is open each morning during the week and several afternoons.  A key fob is required to gain access to the pavilion and there are several of these distributed throughout the membership.
We apologise for any inconvenience and ask for your patience for a few more weeks – we are sure the end result will be beneficial to all members.

Lets get collecting

Active Kids is underway – and we need a team effort!

We are taking part in Sainsburys Active Kids 2011. We hope to collect as many vouchers as possible which we can use for some great new equipment and experiences.

Thanks to you, in 2010 we collected 860 vouchers. This meant we were able to bank the vouchers to add to this years collection. This year we want to aim even higher so we need a big team effort, and that includes you!

You can collect Active Kids vouchers from 9 February to 31 May. You’ll receive 1 voucher for every £10 spent at any Sainsburys main store or £5 spent in Sainsburys convenience stores. You’ll also receive vouchers for groceries online and at petrol stations, plus Nectar points can be turned into Active Kids vouchers too – visit nectar.com for details.

So please help us collect by donating your vouchers to us, and let anyone and everyone know that we are taking part in Active Kids! Your efforts are really appreciated and make a huge difference.

Thanks for your support. Sue Hayes

Movember 2010 - in aid of Prostate Cancer Charity

A message from Andy Carter:

I have decided to throw my (not inconsiderable) weight behind this and grow a tash during Movember, in aid of the Prostate Cancer Charity.

It you feel you are able to sponsor me, that would be fantastic - just go to the website and pledge the donation (http://uk.movember.com) - be a bit careful though, there are three other Andrew Carters doing this. Alternatively I will be carrying around the sponsorship forms to tennis and badminton. Last year the Thames Water team raised over £25k for the charity which was fantastic - but the aim, as always is to do better.

It will be interesting to see if the tash turns out as grey as the rest of (what remains of) my hair or if I end up like Alastair Darling!

Touch Tennis at BITC

Try something new today... well, not today but on 30th October!
The Bucks Indoor Tennis Centre is holding a touch tennis session for all adults and juniors over the age of 16, on Saturday 30th October.
Want more reason to enter? You could win £50!

touchtennis is a fast growing variation of the standard game of tennis. Played on a smaller court with soft balls, the game is growing in popularity with adult players.
The beauty of this new sport is the need for players to evolve from regular tennis dominated by "power-hitting," to more cultured and strategic play - hence the name touchtennis. Speed of mind, understanding of the rival’s weakness and exquisite touch count far more than physical strength and power. Outmanoeuvring your opponent is far more effective than trying to out hit them.
The games addictiveness comes mainly from the way it "levels the field" amongst different players and sexes. The ingenious design of the interaction, between racket-ball-surface-court dimensions, allows for longer rallies and putting the ball away sometimes seems impossible!
The sport has seen many former tennis players (former Wimbledon winners) and commentators give up playing lawn tennis to play full time on the touchtennis circuit and compete fiercely for ranking points. It is great fun to play and brilliant for beginners and less experienced tennis players. The short history of the sport is proving very successful and the touchtennis circuit with its tournaments (slams and masters) is becoming more and more popular. Full details of the sport including its history and background can be obtained from our website www.touchtennis.com which also includes a list of forthcoming tournaments.

Need some more temptation? Check out this video: http://www.youtube.com/user/touchtennis#p/u/6/aNJ0Y18KA9k

If you want to get involved with this exciting event, sign up on the Touch Tennis website, www.touchtennis.com.

Roughing it for charity

A message from one of your fellow members:

"You may remember that last year, I asked friends and family for sponsorship in support of a charity venture I was doing. Well, once again I will be braving the elements on Friday 8th October, and "sleeping rough" in central London in aid of Action for Children.
This is an incredibly worthwhile charity that work tirelessly to help homeless youngsters, and I will be joining several work colleagues to make up a "Steria" team as part of "Byte Night" - the I.T industrys drive to make a difference to the lives of underprivileged young people. So I would like to invite you to visit our "virgingiving" site via the following link, and to make a donation - of whatever you can afford...
Last year your generosity contributed towards our eventual total of nearly £4,000, which Steria then added to to give us a fantastic final amount of over £5K for the evening!!  So I am sure that I can count on you once again (and please forward this mail onto anyone else who you feel may wish to also contribute)..... many, many thanks in anticipation.
Best wishes, Jim"

Apply 2010!

It is that time of the year again...this year, in spite of the significant additional benefit of HSA membership, we have not only persuaded the treasurer NOT to raise the fees this year, BUT we will still be offering the discount to prompt-paying (ie. by the end of April) continuing members – fantastic! You may remember last year, to help spread the payments a bit, particularly for the family memberships, we’ve offered a standing order payment system. Not many availed themselves of last year, but it is remaining available should it be a help to you. As a reminder, if the total of the subs is over £200, you can pay in four equal monthly instalments (April – July). Just download the standing order form and send it in with the completed application form.
